For trans men

Challenges

Transmasculine people often experience an improvement in their dysphoria when they undergo hormone therapy. Hormone therapy can cause, among other things, beard growth and changes in the hairline (androgenetic alopecia with an M-shaped hairline). However, some trans men may still have soft, more feminine or boyish facial features.

Male beauty ideals and their influence

The current ideal of beauty for men is characterized by the following features: a prominent lower jaw (chin and jaw angle), a prominent forehead, eyebrows at the edge of the eye socket, a straight to slightly curved nose and prominent cheekbones. Studies show that these features are associated with male characteristics such as assertiveness, strength and potency.

Established treatments for a masculine appearance

These male facial features can be emphasized with implants or injections of hyaluronic acid. This medical treatment is tried and tested and is currently used primarily for aesthetic purposes.

FAITH trial

What is being investigated?

In the FAITH trial, we will investigate whether feminine facial features can be measurably altered through volumizing injections with hyaluronic acid fillers and botulinum toxin, and whether these changes can influence passing, gender identification and quality of life. Both aspects have already been confirmed in studies on surgical treatments.

If you participate in the FAITH trial, the following facial areas will be treated, depending on your initial situation:

  • Brow bone

  • Eyebrows

  • Cheekbones

  • Nose

  • Chin

  • Jaw line

When you participate, we will collect data on your face-related quality of life. We will also take photos of your face before and after treatment (3 times over a period of 9 months). We will use these photos to assess your gender assignment with the help of artificial intelligence

The FAITH study was approved by the ethics committee.

The treatment is carried out by a doctor at the University Hospital Basel after a detailed analysis and consultation.

The treatment and the products are free of charge for you.
